In a move aimed at fortifying mental health infrastructure within the state, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced the groundbreaking of a new psychiatric facility to be situated in Wichita Falls. The announcement was made yesterday, as reported by the Texas Governor's Office website. The new North Texas State Hospital is part of a concerted effort to enhance and modernize mental health services. The construction is backed with $452 million in funding, approved by Governor Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature, with completion anticipated by late 2027.
The hospital is expected to "offer people in North Texas increased access to mental health professionals and high-quality treatments," Governor Abbott said in a statement obtained by the Texas Governor's Office. The initiative emerges from legislation signed last year by Abbott, which aims to greatly reduce the need for North Texas residents to travel extensive distances for mental health care. The HHSC Executive Commissioner Cecile Erwin Young noted that this investment seeks to deliver treatment that will hopefully allow patients to reintegrate into their communities post-recovery.
With a planned 200-bed capacity, the hospital has been designed to accommodate a variety of patient needs, including 24 maximum-security beds, 136 non-maximum-security beds, and dedicated areas for adolescent patients and civil commitments. Separate living spaces for adult and adolescent patients are to be established, alongside a maximum-security unit imbued with measures to uphold the safety of patients, staff, and the community at large.
To promote a recovery-oriented environment, the design of the hospital incorporates single-person rooms to safely balance privacy for patients. Additionally, common activity areas and outdoor courtyards are to encourage social interaction, contributing to a holistic approach to mental health care. "The state’s unprecedented investment will enhance treatment and help patients return to their homes and communities," said Young in a statement reported by the Texas Governor's Office.
Since 2017, there has been more than $2.5 billion allocated by Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature for enhancing state hospital infrastructure, including replacement, renovation, and expansion projects. As part of these efforts, state hospitals in Austin and San Antonio recently celebrated their grand openings. The portfolio of upcoming projects also includes the new Texas Behavioral Health Center at UT Southwestern in Dallas, a hospital in Terrell with construction beginning in 2025, and new facilities planned for Amarillo and Lubbock.
