Earlier today, a high-speed incident unfolded on the streets of South Memphis, culminating in a violent crash and subsequent injuries. WREG reports that two individuals were injured when their vehicle, a gray sedan identified as stolen, struck a guardrail on Third Street over Interstate 55. The Memphis Police Department (MPD) initially attempted to pull over the vehicle around 4:14 a.m., however, the driver failed to comply and instead escalated the situation by fleeing.
After the driver showed no sign of stopping, officers turned off their pursuit lights and sirens and issued a broadcast to alert officers in the area of a reckless vehicle, as detailed by Action News 5. The sedan was later spotted once again, and in the process of attempting to document the vehicle's tag, a crash occurred. The impact with the guardrail was severe enough to require shutdown of all lanes on I-55, which lasted for about four hours while the scene was cleared.
The aftermath of the crash saw the detention of the two men inside the stolen sedan. According to Local Memphis, the driver, a 21-year-old, sustained non-critical injuries, while a 31-year-old passenger was left in critical condition, necessitating urgent medical attention. Investigators on the scene found drugs and two weapons inside the compromised vehicle.
Although the incident has led to significant traffic disruptions and injuries, no charges have been formally filed at present.
