Following a significant rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Northwest Miami-Dade, the southbound lanes have finally reopened after being closed for several hours yesterday. A fuel tanker, reported to have been carrying 8,000 gallons, overturned as a result of a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles, spilling fuel and causing extensive delays. According to NBC Miami, emergency crews were on the scene into the night, working to clean up the spill and upright the overturned tanker.
The chaotic traffic situation unfolded near NW 103rd Street and extended to NW 125th Street, where bystanders captured images of several badly damaged vehicles, including a Lexus sedan and a red pickup truck. "Ground zero for the zombie apocalypse is here in Miami," said a motorist in a cellphone video cited by WSVN. This incident led drivers to record videos of the widespread congestion and the flipped tractor-trailer.
According to details provided by the Florida Highway Patrol, the initial crash involved the sedan and pickup truck, which subsequently impacted the tanker, causing it and the Lexus to overturn. Fortunately, those involved in the accident sustained minor injuries. However, the impact on traffic was severe, with WSVN reporting that the chaos prompted some drivers to exit their vehicles and others to drive the wrong way on entrance ramps in desperation to avoid the gridlock.
The re-opening of the highway came as a relief to motorists who had been stuck in traffic for hours. As cleanup efforts continued, a road ranger informed WSVN that it could take "at least four or five more hours" to manage the spillage. The challenges of the cleanup were intensified by the large volume of the spilled fuel and positioning of the overturned tanker, which wasn't uprighted until late evening.
