A 25-year-old Illinois man was arrested late Saturday on Interstate 94 after deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office discovered a significant amount of narcotics in his vehicle. According to FOX 17, the arrest was the result of a traffic stop involving a canine unit which detected the narcotics following a report of erratic driving near Partello Road in Marengo Township.
The traffic stop occurred around 11:35 p.m. when the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to an erratic driver on westbound I-94. A deputy, accompanied by a trained police dog, located and pursued the vehicle after witnessing several traffic violations. The driver initially failed to stop but eventually pulled over, as detailed by WWMT.
Upon the vehicle's inspection, the police dog alerted the deputy to the presence of narcotics. A subsequent search revealed bags of substances, suspected to be heroin and fentanyl, prepared for what seemed as individual sales. "The police dog then alerted to the odor of narcotics in the vehicle, which was searched and deputies located numerous bags of suspected narcotics believed to be fentanyl and heroin, which appeared to be packaged for individual sales," FOX 17 reported.
The suspect driver was taken into custody and is being held at the Calhoun County Jail. He is facing charges for possession of narcotics with intent to distribute and failing to stop for police. In a statement reported by WOODTV, the sheriff's office confirmed the arrest and charges, underlining the crucial role the canine deputy played in the drug bust.
