A fatal shooting on the near west side of Indianapolis earlier today has left one man dead. Around 5:15 a.m., the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) received calls regarding a shooting in the 3800 block of W. Michigan St. On arrival, they discovered a man on the ground with injuries from gunshot wounds, where he was pronounced dead at the scene, IMPD detailed in a report covered by WTHR.
Lamenting the loss, Tommy Thompson, IMPD public information officer, reflected on the toll of such violence, saying, "It's too often, and the families—I feel for them. We continue to repeat how hard this has to be on the families and I just, I can’t fathom what everyone’s going through. It’s just disappointing," a statement obtained by CBS4 Indy. A woman at the scene described hearing the shots and calling 911, having seen the victim collapse in the parking lot. Despite detaining and questioning a person of interest, they were released pending further investigation. IMPD made an appeal to locals for any surveillance footage that might shed light on the incident.
Investigators have recovered at least one firearm from the scene and are continuing to collect additional evidence. Thompson emphasized a recurring issue: the preference for violence over peaceful conflict resolution, as he told CBS4 Indy, "We’re not using conflict resolution, we’re not talking, we’re not removing ourselves from conflicts and we’re bringing firearms in too many instances into disturbances and conflicts." The incident, believed to be isolated, prompted no immediate threat to public safety, reaffirmed by IMPD.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office is in the process of identifying the deceased and notifying next of kin. Those with information about the shooting are urged to contact Detective Michal Dinnsen at 317-327-8475 or via email at [email protected], or to reach out to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
