A tragic incident on Murphy Road in Knoxville resulted in the death of a pedestrian and the arrest of a local man, Aldo Weddington, on accusations of DUI. According to WVLT, the crash occurred just after 9 p.m. last Thursday, where 65-year-old Alexandre Azarenok was struck by a vehicle and later pronounced dead. Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers, arriving at the scene near Shannon Valley Farms Boulevard, identified Weddington as the driver.
Officials noticed signs of impairment in Weddington, including constricted pupils and profuse sweating. He admitted to using marijuana in recent weeks and was taking medication for anxiety. Court documents revealed that he was driving without a valid license when the SUV he was operating collided with Azarenok. According to a WBIR, his speech was slow while attempting to communicate with officers, and his eyes were red and watery.
Field sobriety tests were administered, which Weddington failed, leading to the DUI charge against him. The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed in a statement reported by WATE that the vehicle Weddington was driving, a 2018 Chevy Equinox, was traveling east on Murphy Road around the time of the incident.
In addition to the DUI charge, court records indicate that the lack of a proper driver's license has compounded Weddington's legal troubles.
