Lake County has inaugurated a solar array at the Central Permit Facility with the intention to reduce the carbon footprint and fight climate change. The solar installation is said to emulate the energy-saving equivalent of a car driving 2.6 million miles annually, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. These efforts come as part of the county's initiative to fulfill a resolution aimed at net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from government operations by 2020.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, which conspicuously took place under the potent sun, highlighted the upcoming online activation of a system expected to produce approximately 1,452,000 kWh of energy annually. This would be enough to provide power for 200 homes each year. "It’s a testimony to the commitment of the county to take on climate change and make serious efforts to reduce their carbon footprint," Harry Benson, director of business development with Standard Solar, told the Chicago Tribune. The project, featuring state-of-the-art tier-one solar panels, is surrounded by pollinator patches that will support local bee populations.
As detailed by Business Wire, Standard Solar partnered with WCP Solar to develop the ground-mounted 1MW solar array. The installation not only pushes Lake County closer to its sustainability goals but also ushers in economic benefits. "By adopting solar power, we’re not only showcasing our dedication to combating climate change through the expansion of renewable energy and the decarbonization of our local energy sector, but we’re also achieving significant cost savings for Lake County," Sandy Hart, Lake County Board Chair, articulated in the announcement.
Community leaders and residents attended the event, emphasizing the importance of the public-private partnership's role in renewable energy growth. Standard Solar's initiative falls in line with Illinois' expansion of its solar market, driven by policies and incentives aiming for 25% of its energy coming from renewable sources by 2025. "This supportive regulatory environment and financial incentives, supported by strong commitments from local governments and communities, create a favorable environment for further solar developments," Benson added in the Business Wire statement.
