Tragedy struck earlier today on Florida's Turnpike in western Lake Worth when a 17-year-old boy died after jumping off an overpass and being hit by a passing vehicle. The southbound lanes of the Turnpike near mile marker 91 were closed following the incident but have since reopened.
The Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reported that the crash happened at around 5:45 a.m., five miles north of the Boynton Beach Boulevard exit. In a fatal sequence that unfolded quickly, the teen jumped from the Hypoluxo Road overpass and was subsequently struck by a box truck. The driver, identified as a 29-year-old man, could not avoid the sudden impact.
As per the Florida Highway Patrol's account, the teen landed on the hood of the truck and suffered fatal injuries. "The teen, who landed on the hood of the box truck and was hit, was pronounced dead at the scene," a Fire Rescue official said, as reported by WPTV. The driver of the box truck was not injured in the accident.
Authorities shut down all southbound traffic as they attended to the scene, causing significant delays for early morning commuters. Lanes were closed off for several hours as the investigation commenced and the wreckage was cleared. Traffic flow was eventually restored before the late morning rush, with the Turnpike reopening just before 10:30 a.m., according to WFLX.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not yet released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the teen's decision to jump. The case remains under investigation as officials seek to gain a clearer understanding of this heartbreaking event.
