In Las Cruces, New Mexico, a city still grappling with the recent loss of Officer Jonah Hernandez who was slain in the line of duty earlier this year, the police department has aggressively rolled out "Operation Not in Vain." The month-long initiative, dedicated to the memory of Officer Hernandez, has yielded 77 felony arrests and 50 misdemeanor busts, accompanied by upwards of 320 traffic citations, as reported by KFOX-TV. The operation's comprehensive sweep extended to conducting 60 field interviews and inviting over 270 consensual interactions with the community.
Chief Troy Weisler eloquently underscored the mission stating, "We honor Officer Hernandez by continuing his work of serving and protecting the citizens of Las Cruces. His sacrifice was not in vain, and we are dedicated to creating a safer community for all residents," as per KTSM. The operation is expected not only to make more arrests but also to constantly create significant community engagement, with police already reporting 144 meetings with local businesses in the hopes of strengthening communal ties.
According to KVIA, the sweep's impact is measured by tangible results such as 9 firearms seized, 10 separate narcotics seizures, and 12 stolen vehicles recovered, providing a clear indication of the effort's intensity and scope. On the preventive side, officers have also issued 70 trespass warnings and completed 13 intensive warrant searches.
