Las Cruces Police to Increase DUI Checkpoints and Patrols in Effort to Improve Road SafetySource: City of Las Cruces

Las Cruces residents should prepare for increased police presence on the roads before the month is out. The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) has announced intentions to execute at least one sobriety checkpoint and one saturation patrol, measures taken to curb the danger posed by intoxicated drivers.

Alcohol-related accidents are not a new challenge, and LCPD has a history of employing such strategies to promote road safety. According to LCPD, "Sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols are intended to reduce, and eliminate the number of motorists who drive while intoxicated or impaired."

These operations act not only as a deterrent but also as a direct intervention to remove potentially dangerous drivers from the city’s thoroughfares. The message from LCPD is clear, they are encouraging Las Cruces residents who might be drinking to opt for ride-sharing services or select a designated driver, someone committed to steering clear from alcohol for the night.

In addition to monitoring for alcohol-impaired driving, officers will be vigilant for other violations including the use of cell phones by drivers, and ensuring seatbelts and child safety seats are properly used. Road safety is not a singular issue. It is the sum of all parts, and each, no matter how small, contributes to the livelihood of the community.
