A recent collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian has resulted in a fatality, marking a grim milestone in traffic-related deaths for Las Vegas this year. According to a report by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred on August 29, at approximately 9:21 p.m. on W. Maule Avenue east of Pearland Street.
The collision involved a 2022 BMW M4, driven by 21-year-old Ali Khar, and a 62-year-old female pedestrian whose identity is pending notification of next of kin. Tragically, the pedestrian was struck by the vehicle as she crossed W. Maule Avenue, from south to north, and was launched westward onto the roadway. Despite showing no signs of impairment, Khar failed to stop after the collision and was later arrested on hit and run charges after returning to the scene and informing officers of the vehicle's location.
Medical personnel arrived shortly after the incident and transported the pedestrian to UMC Trauma for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced deceased by the medical staff at UMC. This latest casualty brings the total number of traffic-related fatalities within the jurisdiction of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to 100 for the year 2024.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Collision Investigation Section is still investigating the details of the incident. The tragic event raises concerns about pedestrian safety and the imperative measures required to prevent such occurrences in the future.
