Tragedy struck the community of Lemon Grove late on September 7 when a 21-year-old Spring Valley man, Diego Omar Valera-Trujillo, was fatally shot after a dispute that led to gunfire. According to the San Diego Sheriff's Department, deputies were on routine patrol near the 3000 block of Lemon Grove Avenue when they heard gunshots at approximately 11:34 p.m. Investigating the noise, they found Valera-Trujillo with multiple gunshot wounds in the 3100 block of School Lane.
The deputies attempted to immediately provide aid until the Heartland Fire Department arrived to take over life-saving efforts. Valera-Trujillo was quickly transported to a local hospital where, despite the swift response, he later died. The cause and manner of Valera-Trujillo's death are to be officially yet determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.
The following days saw an intensive investigation by Sheriff's Homicide detectives, who were able to identify a suspect. On September 9, Joshua Gonzalez, a 21-year-old resident of Lemon Grove, was apprehended near his home for the murder of Valera-Trujillo. The investigators are currently working to gather more information to uncover the circumstances and motivation behind the shooting as the investigation remains ongoing.
