Lyft Restructures Micromobility Division, Laying Off 1% of Workforce for Strategic FocusSource: Tony Webster from Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, CC BY 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

To streamline operations and bolster its balance sheet, Lyft announced a restructuring plan to shift its focus within its bikes and scooters division, which they now call Lyft Urban Solutions (LUS). According to a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the rideshare company is set to dispose of certain assets and lay off around 1% of its workforce as part of the initiative. Due to this restructuring, Lyft estimates it will incur charges ranging from $34 million to $46 million.

Despite the cuts, the company remains committed to expanding its micro-mobility solutions. Lyft cites bikes and scooters as "core to our purpose and make our company stronger." Led by Michael Brous, the division aims to hone its focus on best-in-class bikes and e-bikes, scooters, electrified docking stations, and software. The shakeup includes discontinuing dockless bikes and scooters in certain markets, signaling a strategic retreat from operations where they may not be as competitive.

Despite the downsizing, Lyft expects these changes to improve its financials, projecting an enhancement of approximately $20 million in annualized Adjusted EBITDA by the end of 2025. The filing with the SEC underscores that most of the charges will be incurred in the third quarter of 2024 and completed by the end of the fourth quarter of the same year. These restructuring costs will not be factored into Adjusted EBITDA, matching the company's previous practices regarding financial presentation and analysis.

Lyft's partnership strategy has also evolved as it seeks to broaden rider options through its app. Where the company doesn't run its own micromobility services, collaborations have been established with competitors Bird and Spin. The pivot to consolidate offerings under Lyft Urban Solutions reflects an ongoing commitment to becoming the "most customer-obsessed integrated micromobility offering for cities around the world", as Lyft asserts in their recent announcement. Michael Brous, the head of Lyft Urban Solutions, echoed this sentiment, expressing the division's dedication to elevating the transportation experience for city dwellers globally.
