The City of Mankato has moved a step closer to finding its new Director of Public Safety with the announcement of three finalists for the coveted position. The vacancy follows the retirement of former Director Amy Vokal at the end of August. The finalists, all with extensive backgrounds in law enforcement, have now been made public for the community to know who may next helm the department responsible for their safety.
First in line for consideration is Jeremy Clifton, currently an Assistant Director of Operations with the Mankato Department of Public Safety. Clifton began his career as a Patrol Officer in 1998 within the same department he has dedicated over two decades of service, rising through the ranks to the position he holds today. Matt DuRose, another long-term member of the department, started as a Patrol Officer in 2000 and now serves as the Deputy Director. These two internal candidates boast a continuum of institutional memory that advocates might say is invaluable to the operation of Mankato's public safety.
Moving beyond the local pool, Wade Lyons, from Austin, TX, rounds out the finalist trio. Lyons has carved out a career with the Austin Police Department since 2006, holding multiple leadership roles including Lieutenant and Commander of various divisions. His most recent position as Commander of the Training and Recruiting Division signals a focus on development and preparedness – attributes key to effective public safety management.
The city's selection process has been comprehensive, with 25 applicants from across the country initially throwing their hats into the ring. After careful review, nine were shortlisted as semi-finalists before narrowing the field down to these three candidates. According to a Facebook post by the City of Mankato, the interview process is slated for September 23, with staff, City Council members, Mankato residents, and members of the Public Safety Advisory Committee slated to participate.
