Washington D.C.'s St. Elizabeths East Campus is set for a transformation with Mayor Muriel Bowser's announcement of the development team for Parcel 6. In a statement from the City of Washington D.C., the Parcel 6 Community Partners, led by Banneker Communities, will helm the creation of a new, mixed-income residential area, complete with retail and amenities.

"With nearly a billion dollars invested into the St. Elizabeths East campus, we are proud to be delivering on the community's vision for this campus. And with each newly developed parcel, we are building on that vision," Mayor Bowser said in the City of Washington D.C. This ambitious project promises 507 rental units and 9 work/live townhomes aptly coined 'The Malcolm' and 'The Martin,' after Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Nina Albert, noted the forecasted delivery of "housing, jobs, amenities, and opportunities" to the residents of Ward 8.

According to the announcement, the development plan also includes 23,000 square feet of neighborhood retail space and 36,000 square feet set aside for public parks and amenities. A significant 30% of housing will be affordable dwelling units, aiming to support lower-income residents and bolster community inclusivity. Omar Karim, President of Banneker Communities, emphasized the aim to maximize the historical site's potential with "high-quality homes, creating job opportunities, and fostering community engagement."

Mayor Bowser's infrastructure boost has injected over $900 million since 2018 into the area, igniting several projects from the Entertainment and Sports Arena to a new medical center slated for a 2025 opening. The parcel project underlines the administration's push for equitable development across D.C., targeting rejuvenation and sustainable growth. "We are excited to partner with Parcel 6 Community Partners to bring this incredible project to fruition," Albert told dc.gov in an official press release.
