In a recent public appearance in Otay Mesa, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria proudly announced the completion of extensive street repairs across the city, totaling over 1,650 miles of road fixed since January 2021. As noted by the mayor, this effort marks a significant increase from the 600 miles repaired in the previous four years. The City of San Diego's announcement emphasized the administration's dedication to tackling the city's ongoing road maintenance issues.
Mayor Gloria emphasized the City's escalated investment in infrastructure, with a record budget allocation of $140 million per year for the past two fiscal years. He stated, "We’ve invested more than ever to fix our streets, and we’re making the most of those resources thanks to our hardworking City crews who are bringing repairs to every neighborhood," according to a City of San Diego report. The city claims to have approximately 25% of the street network repaired or improved.
The focus of the repair effort was revealed also to include a 2.3-mile stretch of Beyer Way, previously assessed as 'poor' with a score of 12.8 on a scale of 100. The work carried out by the City’s in-house mill and pave teams is part of an ongoing mission to improve road conditions and forestall future repair needs for years to come.
Further investment is deemed necessary to maintain the current rate of progress. A new Pavement Management Plan suggests investing $188 million annually over the approaching eight years to raise the condition of City streets to a 'satisfactory' level. Over five years, an additional $4.8 billion will be required to upgrade and modernize San Diego's infrastructure assets broadly.
Regarding budget allocations for road maintenance, the current fiscal plan designates $104.7 million for street resurfacing and $35.3 million for slurry seal treatments to preserve and extend the service life of roads in reasonable condition. An updated Five-Year Paving Plan, combined with the reconstructed StreetsSD interactive webpage, now gives San Diegans a transparent look into existing and prospective paving projects.
