A harrowing incident occurred in Miami when a 26-year-old man, identified as Noel Castro, was arrested after allegedly kidnapping three children during a car theft. According to Miami Police spokeswoman Officer Kiara Delva, the children, aged 1, 10, and 12, were asleep inside their mother's 2021 silver Nissan Versa, which was parked along the side of a street near the Little Havana neighborhood when the vehicle was stolen, as reported by Local 10 News.
The mother had reportedly stepped away for a few moments when Castro seized the opportunity to take the vehicle, leaving her to discover the car and her children missing upon return; she was led to believe the acquaintances of her friend, the reason for her brief departure, were trustworthy. The 12-year-old girl inside the vehicle told police, as she awoke to see a man in the driver's seat of the car who allegedly said, "I got something for you," before he removed his shirt and fled the scene, as an NBC Miami report reveals.
The children were found unharmed within an hour in the abandoned vehicle at Beacon Boulevard and Southwest Sixth Street. A perimeter was then set up by the police, who arrested Castro near West Flagler Street and Southwest 27 Avenue, as captured by surveillance video, according to CBS News Miami. Castro faces multiple charges including kidnapping, grand theft of a vehicle, burglary of an occupied conveyance, and child abuse without great bodily harm.
Police expressed relief that the children encountered no harm, a sentiment echoed in statements obtained by the media, highlighting the successful and prompt action by all officers involved; this included the quick establishment of a perimeter and the gainful usage of surveillance footage to track down and apprehend the suspect, though Castro had previous charges and was out on probation he had been identified due to previous encounters with law enforcement thus enabling a swift arrest and sparing the children a more protracted ordeal.
