A tragic incident occurred on Atlanta's Interstate 75 South Friday afternoon, resulting in one death and injuries to six others. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, traffic on I-75 South began to respond to a disabled vehicle around 1:34 p.m. near the Howell Mill Road area. This reaction triggered a multi-vehicle crash involving seven vehicles including two Freightliner commercial trucks, and a series of passenger vehicles among which were a Ford Transit van, a Hyundai, a Toyota Corolla, and an Audi A4.
The domino effect of the crash began when the two Freightliner trucks struck a Ford Transit van; that had slowed to navigate around the disabled Pontiac. The van then collided with a Hyundai, which in turn impacted a Toyota Corolla. The Corolla overturned, and during the chaos, an Audi A4 was also involved. Additionally, one of the freightliners overturned after making a sudden left turn. As a result, all southbound lanes were closed for several hours, leading to significant traffic backups.
The collisions resulted in one passenger in the Toyota Corolla being pronounced dead at the scene. WSBTV reported that six other individuals sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released to the public.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office and the Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team are conducting comprehensive investigations to determine the events that led to this incident. Prior to the crash, Governor Brian Kemp had encouraged drivers in Georgia to be patient on the roads, as increased crew presence was anticipated due to ongoing recovery efforts following recent events in the state. Meanwhile, information regarding the company affiliation of the Freightliner trucks has not yet been disclosed.
