The Newark Police Department is currently investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred yesterday morning. At around 8:32 am, police officers and fire department officials responded to an incident on Cherry Street where a 60-year-old male bicyclist from Tracy was struck by a vehicle. Despite immediate aid from emergency personnel, the cyclist's life could not be saved.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the victim was riding southbound in the designated bicycle lane when a vehicle, making a left turn from the opposite direction, hit him. The vehicle's driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with the authorities. Traffic Sergeant Karl Fredstrom, from the Newark Police Department, is leading the ongoing inquiry, and anyone with additional information is urged to contact him directly.
The identity of the deceased has been withheld pending notification of the family. This tragic event marks the second fatal traffic collision in Newark for the year 2024.
