A routine patrol for the California Highway Patrol turned into a high-stakes pursuit last week when officers noticed a Honda Accord cruising near High Street and San Leandro Street in Oakland, conspicuously missing its front license plate. After checking the rear plate, registered as lost or stolen, CHP officers gave chase last Wednesday.
The attempted traffic stop quickly escalated as the suspects tried to throw the police off their tail, leading them to a dead end, where the driver and two passengers made a break for it on foot. It wasn't long before officers apprehended the trio, which included two teenagers. According to CHP Oakland's Facebook post, a 17-year-old now faces a slew of charges, including vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, felony evading, and resisting arrest.
The situation took a more serious turn when one passenger, a 16-year-old, tossed aside a firearm during the chase. The weapon was later determined to be a "ghost gun," which lacks a serial number and is typically assembled from parts, making it difficult to trace. CHP Oakland confirmed that the youth was booked into Alameda County Juvenile Hall on multiple charges "for carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a firearm by a minor, and resisting arrest."
