Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has disclosed that Saul Bal, born August 1983, now stands indicted by a Grand Jury on multiple felony charges, including First Degree Murder. These charges revolve around the tragic death of Officer Zane Coolidge, an incident that has left the community and the Phoenix Police Department in mourning. The Grand Jury's indictment, announced yesterday, also includes charges for Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, First Degree Burglary, and Misconduct Involving Weapons.
According to a Maricopa County Attorney's Office press release, the sequence of events leading up to the indictment began on September 3rd, when Phoenix Police responded to a report of a vehicle break-in. Bal reportedly fled upon being confronted by officers, proceeding to then tragically shoot at them, an action resulting in Officer Coolidge's death. Regarding the nature of those events, County Attorney Mitchell has been quoted, as saying, “The men and women in blue are heroes. It is unthinkable that someone would take one of their lives. The person who took Officer Coolidge’s life will be held accountable.”
As the community grapples to come to terms with the loss of an officer, the legal process moves forward. A trial date has yet to be scheduled for Bal, who remains innocent in the eyes of the law until proven otherwise. It is crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction but rather the beginning of a legal journey to uncover the truth and ascertain justice for those affected.
