A reported kidnapping in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood came to a swift conclusion as a 22-year-old developmentally delayed woman, originally taken from the area of Southeast Gladstone Street, was swiftly found and her alleged captor arrested. The Portland Police Bureau said the incident unfolded on Monday morning when East Precinct officers responded to a kidnapping report.
Witnesses were quick to offer up a description of the suspect’s vehicle, a detail that proved crucial in the ensuing search. According to the official police release, officers managed to broadly request a ping on the victim’s phone immediately, and initiated to scour the nearby locations. Their efforts resulted in locating the woman unharmed physically, though she was taken to a hospital for a comprehensive evaluation.
Special Victims Unit Detectives were promptly involved in the case, while local precincts extended the manhunt for the suspect. Following evidence and the victim’s statement, the detectives ascertained that she had been sexually assaulted. The relentless pursuit paid off with the suspect’s vehicle located in the Sellwood neighborhood and seized shortly before 1 p.m. that day.
The suspect, identified as 68-year-old Robert Joseph Bryant, was arrested near his white Dodge truck. The litany of charges against Bryant include Kidnapping in the Second Degree, two counts of Sex Abuse in the First Degree, and other related crimes. "Our hearts go out to the victim and her family," Chief Bob Day expressed in a statement, as reported by the Portland Police Bureau.
