Residents in Provo are being targeted by scam artists pretending to be from Provo Power, and city officials are urging the public to stay alert. As reported by ABC4, these scammers are threatening to disconnect electricity unless immediate payment is made. Provo Power Director Scott Bunker pointed out that these deceitful callers have even provided general account information to victims to seem legitimate.
The city has witnessed a surge in scam attempts via phone calls, emails, and even in-person visits, Bunker "warned customers should be vigilant over the tactics used by scammers to defraud innocent residents," as per ABC4. Amidst these incidents, Provo Power, Provo 311 Customer Service, and Provo Police are all reporting increases in deceptive practices geared toward bilking unsuspecting individuals.
As detailed by FOX13, there are specific measures residents should adopt to protect themselves. These include skepticism toward unexpected communications about utility bills, validating the identity of anyone claiming to be a city employee, and using the city's official online bill pay system at myusage.provo.org rather than relying on search engines which may lead to fraudulent sites.
In addition to these precautions, it's essential never to share personal information through email or to engage with suspicious links, caller ID, even if it appears genuine, can be spoofed, and if something does seem questionable, Provo Power advises to hang up immediately and check the account through official channels, or call Customer Service directly at 801-852-6000. The message is clear: "Be suspicious if you receive an email, text or phone call regarding your utility bill if you have not requested communications from Provo City," as obtained by FOX13, signaling to the citizens the urgent need to cultivate a healthy skepticism to steer clear of the malicious intents of fraudsters.
