"Every day, dangerous, illicit fentanyl continues to flow across our border and endanger Arizonans," Rep. The Fentanyl Disruption Steering Group Establishment Act seeks to enhance interagency coordination by forming a steering group within the National Security Council, composed of senior officials from an array of federal departments. Concurrently, the Anti-Fentanyl Partnerships Act mandates that involved agencies report to Congress on their collaborations with the private sector to dismantle the illegal fentanyl trade. Furthermore, the Fentanyl Defense Threat Assessment Act would compel the Department of Defense to appraise the potential threats posed by the illicit drug trade to the United States' defense interests.
Reflecting on previous interventions to combat fentanyl trafficking, Rep. Gallego has initiated several measures with a tangible impact. Having already steered the Buck Stops Here Act into law, which grants the U.S. Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network fresh authority to pinpoint and act upon money laundering that fuels fentanyl trafficking. Additionally, he introduced the bipartisan Overdose Reversal Medication Act, ambitious legislation aiming to amplify the distribution of opioid-overdose reversal drugs to the public.
Complimenting these legislative efforts, Rep. Gallego sent a letter last week to the Secretary of Homeland Security, insisting that the complete implementation of fentanyl detection technology and the full staffing of Ports of Entry along the southern border be prioritized in future departmental resource allocations.
