After facing a barrage of dust and debris from neighboring construction, Khmai Cambodian Fine Dining is poised for a grand reopening. The popular Rogers Park eatery, which briefly shuttered a month ago due to an adjacent Starbucks build-out, will resume welcoming diners tomorrow, September 18. Reflecting on the decision to temporarily cease operations, owner and chef Mona Sang lamented the unfortunate circumstances. "Our dining room, our kitchen, and everything was covered in dust, top to bottom," she revealed in an interview with Eater Chicago.
The construction woes began on August 13, when Sang arrived to find her establishment inundated with construction detritus from the coffee giant's new outpost. Contaminated glassware and the spoilage of $10,000 worth of food plunged the restaurant into a quagmire, with Sang expressing concerns over breathing conditions and diner safety. According to Block Club Chicago, she stated, "I had to do what was safe for everyone," a sentiment that underscores the dire situation that prompted the closure.
Disputes over responsibility for the debacle have ensued, with Starbucks, the general contractor, and Loyola University – the landlord – engaging in a blame game that left Sang without immediate recourse. Eater Chicago reported Sang's disappointment in the hands-off approach from Starbucks, noting, "Just reaching out and asking if there’s anything we can help you with" would have been a gesture of goodwill. Nonetheless, Sang remains dedicated to the cultural mission of her business, which is not only a restaurant but a medium to "educate Chicago about Cambodian food."
Amidst the chaos, optimism glimmers with Khmai's impending return to service. The restaurant, known for showcasing Cambodian cuisine, is set to introduce happy hour specials and, later this fall, weekend brunch options. Reservations are now open for the reopening day and can be made for the acclaimed space at 6580 N. Sheridan Road. The sister venue Kaun Khmai, which serves a casual take on Cambodian fare, will also be up and running. Staff recruitment is in full swing at Khmai, which was initially staffed by roughly 40 people prior to the closure. Tangible support, while delayed, arrived from Loyola in the form of a loan to aid in the swift revival of Sang's culinary dream, according to her account with Eater Chicago.
While the nearby Starbucks location has yet to fill cups with its hallmark brews, Sang’s establishments are preparing to fill plates once again.
