Early Saturday morning, the quiet of Dorchester was disrupted by a violent altercation. Boston Police Department officers from District C-11 (Dorchester) and District B-2 (Roxbury) arrested Kelvin Ortiz, a 30-year-old Roxbury resident in connection with an assault and battery call involving a stabbing. The Boston Police Department reports indicate that the incident took place near the intersection of Columbia Road and Stoughton Street.
Responding to the scene at approximately 8:36 AM, officers found an adult male suffering from a stab wound. The quick arrival of Boston EMS enabled the victim to receive immediate attention and transportation to a local hospital, where he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. During a crucial moment before being taken to the hospital, the victim identified a fleeing Ortiz near the corner of Columbia Road and Dudley Street.
The subsequent pursuit of Ortiz involved a vivid police chase. Officers disseminated a physical description of the suspect, who was then spotted on a bicycle. The search operation spanned several blocks, ultimately converging on Ortiz as he got off his bicycle and attempted to vault a fence on Gene Street. A communication from local residents indicated that Ortiz broke into a basement on Humphreys Street. As he tried to escape the basement, police successfully apprehended him on Wendover Street, ending his brief flight from the law.
Ortiz, now in custody, faces multiple charges, including Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Breaking and Entering Daytime for Felony, and Trespassing. He is set for arraignment at the Dorchester District Court. The swift police response and cooperation from community members were key to resolving this dangerous situation with no further harm to the public, demonstrating the critical role of vigilant community awareness in urban safety.
