Four men from Sacramento have been indicted for the kidnapping of an Antelope Valley businessman, a case that has taken a turn from last year's violent abduction to this week's legal proceedings. According to the Justice Department, Shanjeet Brar, 57; Jerome Franklin Jr., 43; Peter Arafiles Jr., 29; and Andrae Hawkins, 39, face charges including conspiracy to commit kidnapping and kidnapping. While Brar, Arafiles, and Hawkins are in custody following their arrest, Franklin remains a the run.
The indictment, which was unsealed early this month, lays out the dire circumstances surrounding the October 27 assault. The businessman was taken at gunpoint, beaten, and his hands were bound with zip ties while his face was concealed with duct tape. The assailants allegedly demanded a ransom exceeding $100,000, along with gold and jewelry, threatening the victim's life. Simultaneously, some of the accused purportedly burglarized the victim’s residence, prompting a call from the victim's wife after she noticed the crime through their home security system.
"These defendants are charged with putting the victim through a terrifying ordeal, one that will leave lasting emotional and psychological scars," United States Attorney Martin Estrada stated, emphasizing a zero-tolerance stance on such violent behavior. The FBI's Akil Davis echoed these sentiments, reassuring the public that the arrests have made communities safer and highlighting the teamwork behind the investigation.
In addition to the personal tragedy inflicted upon the victim and his family, the case underscores the Justice Department's Operation Safe Cities, an initiative aimed at clamping down on the region's prime instigators of violent crime. Invoking a strategy of tactical enforcement, the operation hopes to curtail crimes connected to illicit firearms and robbery crews wreaking havoc on local businesses. Considerable sentences await the defendants if convicted on all charges, with the possibility of life in federal prison.
The ongoing investigation is a joint effort between the FBI and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Prosecutors Kevin J. Butler and Jena A. MacCabe of the Violent and Organized Crime Section are leading the charge in this significant case, with the judicial process expected to unfold in the following weeks at the United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles.
