A series of events on San Antonio's Northwest Side has led to the death of a young pedestrian. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the identity of the victim as David Bernardo Valdez Jr., a 24-year-old man who suffered fatal blunt force injuries yesterday morning. According to an update from KSAT, Valdez was struck by a truck that was rushing a stabbing victim to the hospital at approximately 3 a.m., near Northwest Loop 410 access road and Callaghan Road.
Details have emerged indicating that the driver of the truck was initially thought to have been under the influence, potentially facing DWI charges. However, this was later clarified when authorities stated the driver was found to not be impaired and will thus not be charged, as mentioned in the same KSAT report. The passenger victim of the stabbing was reportedly transported to a hospital and is in stable condition. The incident is layered with complexity, as it occurred while an act of urgency to save another life unfortunately ended up to tragically claim one.
San Antonio police are still investigating the stabbing that prompted the rushed hospital visit, which initially happened near Aurora Avenue and Hortencia Street. The perpetrator of the stabbing has not been apprehended, but police believe they have an idea of who committed the attack. A full investigation into both incidents is ongoing.
There has been an outpouring of community concern and questions in the wake of the incident, as residents grapple with the simultaneous calamities. In a report by John Trent, authorities confirmed the series of events, providing the same essential narrative that a life-saving effort inadvertently turned into a life-ending tragedy. The conditions under which Valdez found himself in the path of the truck remain part of the investigation.
