The County’s Office of Sustainability and Environmental Justice (OSEJ) actively seeks individuals to join a new Environmental Justice Workgroup. Those who step up to serve will have the chance to directly influence sustainability policies and services tailored to encompass a strong social equity aspect. The initiative focuses on including a wide range of voices in planning for climate action. It recognizes that to address the needs of communities affected by environmental issues effectively, we need to involve them directly. The group will help San Diego County departments and other areas with climate justice issues, like better air quality, healthier food, and safer, more sustainable outdoor spaces, as detailed by the County of San Diego.

Reflecting a commitment to inclusion and diversity, the Workgroup will consist of 21 members, all chosen based on an application review. Membership eligibility spans various demographics and experience levels, such as residents with a firsthand understanding of environmental injustice, Tribe members, the youth, community or Tribal organization leaders, academics specialized in field-related disparities, and individuals of often marginalized or under-represented groups.

County’s Chief Sustainability Officer Eden Brukman highlighted the importance of this collated approach, stating, "The most equitable and informative way to shape climate action in the region is with direct participation of the people facing daily climate challenges in their communities," County of San Diego reports. This sentiment underscores the county's objective to actively learn from and coordinate with the Workgroup to improve quality of life and fortify resiliency within San Diego County.

There's a financial incentive, too, as members will be provided a $150 stipend for participating in each meeting, recognizing the value of their contributions. The application window opened on September 3 and will remain open until November 11. Potential applicants can further educate themselves during two informational sessions hosted by OSEJ online on September 24 and October 24 from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
