A man is now facing murder charges after being accused of fatally stabbing his mother in their shared Clairemont Mesa East apartment. The incident unfolded yesterday when Jamal Aytes, 30, called the police at around 4:37 p.m., claiming his mother was threatening him with a butter knife during a mental breakdown, as initially reported by the San Diego Police Department.
Responding officers evaluated the situation at the apartment in the 7300 block of Mesa College Drive. They left after determining no crime had been committed, and Jacqueline Aytes, 60, was not placed under a mental health hold. The son was absent during that intervention.
The situation escalated later in the evening. Around 7:54 p.m., a local hospital contacted authorities to report Aytes had been admitted with cuts on his hands. Officers returned to the residence for a welfare check, where they discovered the body of Jacqueline Aytes with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jamal Aytes, who was treated for hand injuries, is being held and will be charged with murder. Detectives are still trying to piece together what happened before the stabbing.
The police have appealed to the public for any information about the investigation. Witnesses or those with knowledge of the case are urged to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
