San Diego is poised to improve its stormwater management system after the State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 3227 to streamline the maintenance of storm channels. The bill, also known as the "Streamlining Storm Water Channel Maintenance Act," was developed with Assemblymember David Alvarez and the City of San Diego. According to Inside San Diego, the legislation aims to simplify clearing and reinforcing stormwater channels, which complex state and federal regulations had hampered.
The urgency for this measure has grown in light of harsher winter storms, which have heightened the necessity to reduce regulatory red tape and allow cities like San Diego to prepare for significant weather events. The bill stands complemented by Alvarez's AB 2501, which permits local governments to fund technical assistance and permitting for stormwater projects. Drawing attention to the combined strength of the two bills, Inside San Diego explains that the city would be better equipped to handle the predicted increase in severe weather due to climate change.
In anticipation of the bill's potential to bolster infrastructure, supporters call on Governor Gavin Newsom to sign both bills into law. The move would proactively respond to the evolving climate challenge, as San Diego aims to maintain its stormwater channels more efficiently and with less bureaucratic delay. "I encourage Governor Gavin Newsom to sign these two vital bills into law, allowing us to maintain our stormwater infrastructure more efficiently", one declaration of support was quoted by Inside San Diego.
