In a recent flurry of controversial events within the San Diego Unified School District, former Superintendent Lamont Jackson has been terminated following an investigation into misconduct allegations. According to Hoodline, the school board made a unanimous decision to dismiss Jackson after the investigation found he "more likely than not" engaged in "unwelcome, sex-based behavior" against two female employees.
Despite Jackson's vehement denial of sexual harassment claims—as stated in an ABC 10News article—the allegations encompassed suggestive comments and unfair job advancements tied to sexual favors. Both former district employees, Tavga Bustani and Monika Hazel, claimed their careers suffered upon rebuffing Jackson's advances. Sent to the district by some anonymous school principals.
The school board's delayed awareness of these allegations further concerns the district's handling of such matters. The letter sent in July 2023 was only recently brought to the board's attention, fueling criticism of the district's internal communication and responsiveness to potentially serious accusations. "An assumption was made that the letter had been shared with the Board," the district said in a statement, acknowledging their oversight, as NBC San Diego reports.
While the metamorphosis of an administration burdened by scandal unfolds, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Fabiola Bagula has assumed the interim leadership role. Detailed by Hoodline, Dr. Bagula is seen as capable of ensuring "stability and consistency" amidst this change. However, Jackson's departure does not sever all ties with the district financially, as San Diego Unified is bound to fulfill his contract's termination clause, continuing his salary of $433,125 for the next half year.
