San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced charges today against a man accused of a hate crime attack in the Financial District as the city reels from the disturbing event that targeted local chef and Netflix alumni Wendy Drew. According to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, Irvin Rivera-Lara, 31, is charged with assault likely to cause great bodily injury, battery with serious bodily injury, and both enhanced with hate crime allegations. Rivera-Lara is currently in custody and is expected to be arraigned at the Hall of Justice.
The assault unfolded near California Street and Drumm Street, where Drew, an African-American celebrity chef known from the show "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment", was confronted by Rivera-Lara. According to Hoodline, the accused is said to have utterly profaned the air with racial slurs before physically attacking her. Drew shared, "This guy looks pretty normal, with this dog, walks by and he calls me the N-word, right? And I was like, excuse me, why are you calling me that? So he comes back and says what? Then he starts pummelling, and just knocks me down," as per CBS San Francisco.
Security footage from the scene helped apprehend Rivera-Lara, who was detained due to the efforts of individuals from a nearby restaurant. The police have linked him to similar incidents, suggesting a pattern of racially motivated attacks. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins emphasized, as cited by the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, "Hate crimes have no place in our community and must be addressed swiftly by the criminal justice system," stressing the impact of such attacks on both individuals and communities at large.
