The tech world is setting its sights on San Francisco for an international gathering to tackle some of the big questions around artificial intelligence. According to an announcement from the U.S. Commerce Department, the city will host the first meeting of the International Network of AI Safety Institutes this November. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, and U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken, shared the details about the event, which aims to bring together top AI experts worldwide to discuss the safe and secure development of AI technology.
The initiative was first unveiled at the AI Seoul Summit back in May, and now, it's coming to fruition with leaders from Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Japan, Kenya, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States ready to join forces. They all have an ambition to share the potential benefits of AI. This international effort seeks to coordinate scientific and technical expertise to advance AI safety as the technology takes on an increasingly pivotal role globally. The network member countries have clarified that international cooperation is key here.
"AI is the defining technology of our generation. With AI evolving at a rapid pace, we at the Department of Commerce, and across the Biden-Harris Administration, are pulling every lever. That includes close, thoughtful coordination with our allies and like-minded partners," Raimondo stated, as per the U.S. Commerce Department, stressing the importance of shaping "the rules of the road on AI" around safety, security, and trust. Blinken supported this sentiment, emphasizing the critical role of international collaboration in deploying AI technology effectively to tackle global issues.
