In a move to bolster the community's engagement with its historic fabric, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is on the lookout for community members eager to join the Pioneer Square Preservation Board. There are current vacancies for a Property Owner, an Attorney, and an At-Large member. As per an announcement from the Mayor's office, individuals with a passion for historic preservation and those with knowledge of Pioneer Square are heartily encouraged to apply.
The Pioneer Square Preservation Board, according to the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, is tasked with a crucial oversight role. The board is responsible for making recommendations on facade alterations, signs, new constructions, changes of use, and street improvements within the International Special Review District. Comprising ten members, the board works closely with the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) Director. Their goal is not simply to maintain, but to actively ensure the architectural, cultural, and social tapestry of the district works to enhance its economic vitality through historical preservation.
For those interested in contributing their time and expertise, be prepared for bi-monthly meetings. These are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m., available both virtually and in person. Additional committee work may also be part of the duties, with an overall time commitment ranging from 4 to 8 hours a month. Appointed board members serve without monetary compensation, but their role is instrumental in shaping the narrative of one of Seattle's most storied neighborhoods.
The application process is straightforward. Candidates should send a letter of interest and resume to Genna Nashem at [email protected], by the deadline of September 20, emphasizing in the subject line their interest in the Pioneer Square Preservation Board. Electronic submissions are preferred, but those wishing to submit a paper copy can do so by addressing their documents to Genna Nashem, Pioneer Square Preservation Board Coordinator, housed within the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, at their PO Box address.
