In a bid to bridge the digital divide, Seattle has made strides in making internet access more affordable for its residents. The collaboration between the Affordable Seattle Team and the Digital Equity Team within Seattle IT has resulted in the launch of a low-cost internet scheme on CiviForm, which streamlines the process of signing up for such services. According to an announcement by Seattle IT, the project was spearheaded by team members including Delia Burke, Matthew Sprenke, and Brenda Tate.
Prior to this initiative, residents had to navigate the cumbersome process of applying with a paper form that was only available in English. Now, with the transition to CiviForm, applications can be filled out in one of eight languages. In what amounts to a significant upgrade, the portal allows the applicants to repurpose their previously entered information for enrolling in eight other City programs, which potentially saves over $25,000 in common living expenses such as childcare, transportation, and recreation.
This opportunity is not limited in scope, extending to existing and new customers of Astound living in serviceable areas. To be eligible, household incomes must be below 70% of the State's Median Income. For instance, a family of four would need to have an annual income of less than $85,142 to qualify for the program.
Emphasizing the practicality of this initiative, Seattle’s Digital Equity Team has taken significant steps to ensure that a basic necessity such as internet access does not remain out of reach for those in the lower income brackets. The collaboration between various parties has paved the way for an inclusive approach that seeks to understand and cater to the multifaceted needs of Seattle's diverse population. It is an effort that has the potential to not only enhance connectivity but also empower communities by providing them with essential tools to thrive in a rapidly digitizing world.
