In an effort to strengthen the investigation of crimes involving guns and stymie the flow of illegal firearms, Senator Ron Latz of the DFL – St. Louis Park has declared a new legislative initiative. The proposal necessitates the tracking of firearms utilized in criminal acts throughout Minnesota and underlines the importance of collaboration among law enforcement agencies.
As detailed by Senate DFL, the legislation will mandate that all law enforcement in the state adopt the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms's eTrace system for tracing firearms used in crimes. This arises from data showing that almost 40% of agencies fail to use the eTrace system, and, of those that do, a meager 13% share their findings with others.
"Tracking firearms used in violent crimes is critical to solving cases quickly, keeping dangerous criminals off the streets, and combatting illegal gun trafficking," Senator Latz underscored in a statement. "This legislation will ensure that law enforcement agencies are using this critical tool to get violent criminals off the street sooner and prevent crime." A significant goal of Latz's proposed bill is the acceleration of firearm tracing which could potentially shorten the time it takes to apprehend suspects.
In accordance with the proposed legislation, enhanced use of the ATF's eTrace system facilitates not only the disruption of gun trafficking networks but also bolsters investigative processes by tracing gun origins back to their sources enabling the quicker solving of related criminal cases. Senator Latz firmly believes, that in sharing trace information law enforcement can better discern the patterns, that drive gun-related crimes and create more efficient preventative strategies.
"We can make our communities safer by using all the tools at our disposal," Senator Latz articulated, reflecting a conviction that this legislative effort is a vital stride towards mitigating gun violence in Minnesota.
