In what could have been a far more harrowing incident, a school bus accident in Central Las Vegas has left a student hospitalized and several others claiming minor injuries. The collision, which took place near U.S. 95 this morning, involved a Clark County School District bus and an empty Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) bus. According to FOX5 Vegas, the accident occurred as both buses attempted to navigate a turn onto the northbound lanes of U.S. 95 from MLK Boulevard.
Out of the 54 students on board the CCSD bus, one was rushed to an area hospital while four others reported injuries but were not hospitalized, authorities say. Picked up by their parents, the rest of the student body was escorted by another school bus to their middle school, which proceeded despite the morning’s events. The specifics regarding the hospitalized student’s condition have not been disclosed as investigations continue.
Trooper Shawn Haggstrom with the Nevada State Police was on the scene to evaluate the situation. No passengers were present on the RTC bus at the time of the crash, which left both buses awaiting inspection by commercial troopers. As noted in a News3LV report, the ramp and roadway where the incident took place have since reopened.
In response to the collision, both buses remained on the site for some time after the event as troopers conducted their inspections, ensuring the safety of the vehicles before they were eventually cleared from the roadway.
