For those wondering if their child's car seat is up to snuff, Surprise Fire-Medical and Police Departments are offering free car seat safety checks this weekend. On Saturday, September 21, from 9 to 11 a.m., safety technicians will be at the Target parking lot at 13731 E. Bell Rd to inspect your child's car seat for proper installation and usage. The timing couldn't be better, as it's smack dab in the middle of Child Passenger Safety Week.
Parents and caregivers wanting to participate should bring a few key items for the check: the child, or their weight and height measurements if they can't make the trip; the vehicle owner’s manual, and child seat owner’s manual if available, and that all-important positive attitude. The goal is to arm folks with knowledge and confidence that their little ones are buckled up correctly. Due to incorrect seat belt use, a staggering 94% of children are moved to a seat belt before they're properly fit, according to a press release from the City of Surprise.
Initiatives like the upcoming safety check and Child Passenger Safety Week highlight the ongoing need to educate on child seat safety. This event also coincides with National Seat Check Saturday and receives funding from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, ensuring the resources to keep our children secure are readily available and accessible to the community.
Surprise offers monthly car seat clinics at Fire Station 307, located at 16171 Cactus Rd., They're held the first and third Tuesday, and third Saturday of every month from 9 to 10:45 a.m. No appointments are necessary, as service is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For additional details, or if you find yourself with lingering concerns, you're encouraged to reach out at 623.222.5000.
