A suspect is now in custody relating to the death of a man in East Village earlier this week. The shooting and stabbing incident left a 53-year-old Black male dead, with authorities promptly responding to the scene after gunshots were reported near 14th Street and Imperial Avenue on Tuesday night, as reported by the City of San Diego.

The victim, who was discovered wounded on the sidewalk, had received a medley of vicious gunfire and stab wounds and, despite rapid transportation to a local hospital, succumbed to his injuries. His identity is withheld as the County Medical Examiner has not formally identified him. Working the case, San Diego Homicide Detectives believe an altercation amongst a sidewalk group spun fatally out of control, resulting in the victim being shot and then stabbed, with suspects escaping in various directions.

In the quick succession of events, detectives managed to resolve probable cause against Alex Bailey, a 53-year-old Black male, for the shooting of the victim. Bailey was apprehended immediately during a traffic stop at 2800 National Avenue the following day. He is currently being processed for booking on murder charges at the County Jail.

Detectives are working hard to identify the suspect in a stabbing and several other people involved. They’re asking anyone who saw anything or has information to contact the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
