An 81-year-old woman, identified as Susan Erica Hammerton, has died following a violent home invasion in Pittsfield Township near Ann Arbor. The woman's 82-year-old husband and their dog were also injured in the Friday midnight incident on Breckland Dr., which led to stab wounds for both the man and the animal. According to CBS News Detroit, officials have charged a 40-year-old local man, Anthony Flanagan, with open murder and a slew of other charges.
Flanagan, who was arraigned on Saturday, Sept. 14, is accused of fatally stabbing Hammerton after breaking into the couple's residence. Police responded to the scene after midnight upon notification from a resident who reported Flanagan knocking on their door unclothed. Flanagan, who had been involved in a family altercation beforehand, had attempted to get into various homes, according to reports from MLive. The man is now being held in Washtenaw County Jail without bond, awaiting a court appearance on Sept. 26.
Hammerton died during emergency surgery following an attack that Nicole Hughes, assistant prosecuting attorney for Washtenaw County, described as beginning with Flanagan hitting her upon his entry into the home. Her husband, upon thinking Flanagan had left, found himself attacked alongside his wife when Flanagan returned, wielding a knife. The husband is reportedly stable, while their dog is also expected to survive.
Pittsfield Township Police Department Detective Bureau, meanwhile, continues to seek any additional information from the public concerning the case.
