A man is now in police custody after a bizarre incident at Aventura Mall yesterday night, where he allegedly impersonated a law enforcement officer and subsequently attempted to steal a vehicle. According to Local 10, Aventura police responded to a call about the imposter just after 9 p.m. In what was initially believed to be an armed confrontation due to his erratic behavior, mall-goers were thrown into a state of alarm.
The situation escalated when officers, responding to a second similar incident, located the man after he fled into the mall. Shoppers near the Cheesecake Factory at the time of the incident were under the impression that the man might have been bearing a firearm. However, Aventura police Officer Hans Maestre clarified, "At no time was there any firearm, there was no gun in play -- there was no firearm that was ever recovered," in a statement given to Local 10. The police stated they believe the man was armed only with a wrench.
During the arrest, officers were seen handcuffing a suspect wearing an orange hard hat and vest, as shown in video footage released by NBC Miami. This footage initially led to widespread misinformation about an active shooter, which was soon corrected by law enforcement. Details about the motives and actions behind the disturbance are still under investigation.
