In a legal finding that reflects the breach of trust commonly observed in healthcare settings, Swampscott chiropractor Ilan Amar has entered a guilty plea to charges of indecent assault and battery, along with open and gross lewdness, according to a recent disclosure from the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
Amar, 50, of Marblehead and owner of A Touch of Health Chiropractic, pleaded guilty in Superior Court in Salem on September 20. He faces consequences from both the legal system and a community that once trusted him, following complaints from three individuals who were victims of his misconduct at his practice located at 444 Humphrey Street in Swampscott.
Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker characterized the transgressions as "reprehensible," spotlighting the bravery of the victims for confronting the injustice and preventing further potential abuses; as they navigated personal trauma and systemic procedures to report the chiropractor's indecencies, Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Nasson and retired Detective Ted Delano were credited by Tucker for their diligence throughout the investigation and legal process, ensuring a comprehensive approach to justice, as stated in the same press release.
This case which came to closure in the courtroom overseen by the Hon. Thomas Drechsler delivered a sentence to Amar of two-and-one-half years in the House of Correction, with a definitive mandate of two years and the balance to be suspended if he can navigate a three-year term without incident.
As part of his probationary stipulations, Amar will register as a sex offender, maintain distance from the victims, refrain from healthcare employment, and submit to drug screenings among other conditions.
