A Taylorville, Illinois, woman, Lori Zeitler, who for over three decades worked at the Christian County YMCA, has been handed down a sentence of three years of probation and has been ordered to repay $600,000 in restitution, this sentence comes after Zeitler was found guilty of embezzling funds from her employer, found guilty on five counts of wire fraud on September 26, the U.S. Attorney's Office reported.
During her tenure at the YMCA, the 65-year-old worked in various capacities, including bookkeeper, and it was within this role that she was able to divert at least $292,336.29 for her own use, the discovery of the theft coincided with a transition to a new internet-based accounting system; and the U.S. District Judge Sue E. Myerscough, presiding over the case, expressed stark disbelief over the breach of trust by Zeitler against the very community the YMCA is meant to serve.
The statutory penalties for wire fraud could have resulted in up to twenty years of imprisonment and significant fines but the court settled on a non-custodial punishment and financial reparations, Zeitler had pleaded guilty to the charges on March 28 earlier this year in court, which may have influenced the sentencing, according to insights shared at the court hearings.
"The impact of the defendant’s deception is wide reaching, as the money she stole deprived the Christian County YMCA of funds that should have gone towards needed facility improvements and to support programs for members," Assistant U.S. Attorney Sierra Senor-Moore highlighted the ramifications of Zeitler's actions, emphasizing on the breadth of deceit that unfolds beyond the immediate financial discrepancies FBI Springfield Special Agent in Charge Christopher Johnson added, "We at the FBI and our law enforcement partners will always pursue justice in an effort to preserve the public's trust in its valued institutions."
The lengthy investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Springfield Field Office, the Taylorville Police Department, and the Illinois State Police, culminating in the prosecution led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sierra Senor-Moore; Lori Zeitler is now facing the consequences of her actions, accounting for a breach in trust that spanned many years and impacted the generous nature of an organization dedicated to community service.
