Tempe was the scene of two shooting incidents in recent days, first at Arizona Mills mall and then near Baseline and Kyrene roads, raising concerns in the community. Yesterday, police detained a suspect after a shooting where no one was struck, the incident occurring around 5:15 p.m. the previous day, according to FOX 10 Phoenix. Authorities reported that, thanks to multiple 911 calls, officers were able to safely take him into custody without further danger to the public.
After the suspect was taken into custody, "Tempe dispatch received multiple 911 calls around 5:15 p.m., about a man shooting a gun in the area of Kyrene Rd and Cornell Rd. Officers responded quickly and found the armed man nearby and were able to safely take him into custody. There is no further danger to the community. This is still an active investigation, but at this point we have no confirmed victims," "Tempe PD said," as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Roads in the area were locked down briefly but have since reopened as the investigation continues.
In an unrelated incident, authorities are seeking help from the public in solving a separate shooting, which happened a few days earlier on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the food court of Arizona Mills mall. Following an argument between two groups, shots were fired; however, no injuries were reported. Details surrounding the mall shooting remain scarce, with neither arrests nor detentions currently announced by the Tempe Police Department.
As people were ducking and running for cover, surveillance video posted on social media captured the sound of gunshots and voices raised in alarm. In connection with this incident, "the Tempe Police Department has not said if anyone has been arrested or if any suspects have been detained," but has requested for anyone with video or photos from the mall or food court area between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday to call 480-350-8311 and callers may remain anonymous, according to a statement retrieved by AZ Central. The department has declined to conduct media interviews about the ongoing investigation or to respond to further inquiries about the mall shooting.
