As Child Passenger Safety Week(Sept. 15-20) unfolds, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) takes this moment to prompt drivers about the gravity of proper child safety seat practices. These guidelines stand crucial for safeguarding the youngest Texans on the roadways. “Children mimic the adults around them, so it is critical for parents, grandparents and loved ones to model the importance of wearing seatbelts and following other safe practices in the car,” stated DPS Director Steven McCraw in a recent reminder. The emphasis on modeling exemplary behavior for children was highlighted as key to ensuring their safety when traveling.
The stark reality of motor vehicle accidents, which remain a leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 to 13, underscores the importance of these practices. In 2022, the U.S. saw 1,129 children's lives cut tragically short due to automobile crashes, as reported by DPS. The Texas law is explicit: all children younger than 8 years old, aside from those who are taller than 4’9, must be in the appropriate car seat that properly fits within the vehicle and is installed as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Nonetheless, an overlooked component is often the history of a car seat—DPS warns against purchasing seats without clarity on their past, which could compromise safety.
There are additional rules for booster seats and older children; lap belts should be worn across the pelvis, and shoulder belts should cross the shoulder, not the neck or abdomen. Noncompliance with these regulations not only endangers children but also carries a monetary penalty, with fines of up to $250 for those found not properly restraining a child.
To ease the navigation through these regulations, certified technicians are on hand to inspect car seat installations or provide assistance rightfully. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website offers a search tool to locate nearby helpers, ensuring parents and guardians can have peace of mind that their child's car seat is installed correctly.
