As the Labor Day weekend takes off, travelers across the nation are packing airports and highways in what is shaping up to be a bustling end to the summer. As per FOX 5 Atlanta, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is expecting to see a staggering 2.3 million people. The TSA is gearing up for a surge, estimating nearly 3 million people to be screened nationwide on Friday alone. This marks an uptick from the usual traffic, indicative of Americans' relentless spirit to squeeze in one last vacation before the curtain falls on summer.
With more than 349,000 passengers anticipated on a peak travel day, lines are present but manageable. The average wait time has hit below the 30-minute target set by TSA officials, hovering around 18 minutes. While the morning rush has historically been the best time to hit the road, according to WSB-TV Atlanta, experts suggest an early start or late evening to beat the heaviest traffic, which is expected between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow.
Despite more than 200 flight cancellations and a spate of delays - over 4,500 flights felt the ripple effect - passengers like Boston resident Dani Fleming have taken these hiccups in stride. "The flight was easy. (I) napped for a little bit, watched movies,” Fleming told WSB-TV Atlanta. “This was a breeze.” Similarly, travelers from Chicago have embraced the moment, with Benjamin Schmeiser pointing out the excitement for a family trip to San Diego, a celebration of renewed possibilities in the wake of a receding pandemic.
For those taking the roads, the news from FOX 5 Atlanta is a silver lining amidst the travel frenzy. Gas prices are getting a break, sitting 13% lower than last year at around $3.35 per gallon according to AAA. Electric vehicle chargers tell a different story with prices varying significantly by state, but the downward trend in travel costs is a welcome turn as summer travel reaches a crescendo.
For those caught in delays or cancellations, the key is to remain proactive. Checking flight status before heading to the airport can spare the frustration of being stuck. And in the event of cancellations, diligence in seeking alternative arrangements is crucial. As Shannon Beddingfield wisely noted while preparing for her trip to Orlando, as reported by WSB-TV Atlanta, "Go with the flow. You don't need to hate on the customer-service people. They're doing the best they can."
