Residents and staff at The Cove at La Jolla Post-Acute Care Center are facing a health advisory following reports of TB exposure. According to the San Diego County, the facility at 7160 Fay Ave., La Jolla, is navigating a scenario where individuals might have been exposed to tuberculosis from February 17 to September 16. Considering the disease's difficulty to be promptly diagnosed, individuals with potential contacts during this period are encouraged to reach out to health officials.
The situation is particularly concerning as the tuberculosis strain in question is thought to be drug-resistant. Those who frequented The Cove at La Jolla or provided care for exposed individuals should immediately call the County Tuberculosis Control Program at (619) 692-8621, seeking specific advice on the next steps.
Tuberculosis, an infectious disease, spreads via airborne transmission when an infected person coughs, speaks or breathes. Close and prolonged indoor contact increases the risk of contraction. Testing is recommended for people with such exposure, as early diagnosis can significantly improve outcomes. Those experiencing persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss should see a medical provider, as these are tell-tale signs of active TB. Dr. Ankita Kadakia, County Interim Public Health Officer, advised to seek medical consultation to exclude active TB and discuss necessary treatment.
