A freeway shooting on I-580 in Oakland left two people injured last Saturday. The violent incident unfolded in broad daylight, at about 2:11 p.m. near Seminary Avenue, prompting a significant response from law enforcement and emergency services. According to the CHP Golden Gate Division, a man and a woman were struck by gunfire while driving on the eastbound lanes.
The male victim, after being wounded, was able to call 9-1-1 and subsequently navigate his vehicle to a hospital in San Leandro seeking urgent medical attention. The gunshot wound he sustained to his abdomen was deemed non-life-threatening. However, the female passenger was not as fortunate, having suffered a life-threatening injury due to a gunshot wound to the head. She was later moved to a local trauma center for specialized care.
CHP’s Golden Gate Division Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and the Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) were promptly on scene to begin the investigative process. For over six hours, all eastbound lanes of I-580 were shut down at Seminary Avenue starting from 3:11 p.m., causing considerable traffic disruption. This closure, part of the meticulous scene work that is crucial after such incidents, lasted until the lanes reopened at around 10:15 p.m. the same day.
As of now, the motives behind the shooting remain elusive with detectives hard at work piecing together the events that led up to the assault. The CHP investigators have identified no suspect.
