Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla vocalized UC San Diego's commitment to climate issues in a statement to Scripps Oceanography, explaining the vital role of cross-disciplinary collaboration. "At UC San Diego, our visionary scientists are working across disciplines to tackle the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on marine life," Khosla said. Anticipating the center to be instrumental in advancing knowledge and conservation strategies, Khosla praised the Frontiers Group and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation for recognizing and nurturing this ambitious endeavor.

Led by Martin Tresguerres, a marine physiologist at Scripps, the new center will study how marine animals' nervous systems work and how they adapt to environmental changes. Tresguerres emphasized the need to understand how these animals cope with natural changes and the rapid effects of climate change. The goal is identifying which species are resilient and at risk due to climate shifts.

Kathryn Richmond, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Director of the Frontiers Group, underscored the groundbreaking nature of this initiative. "The lens of climate change is entirely new for the Frontiers Group, and the timely work of the Allen Discovery Center is critical to understanding the consequences of the climate crisis on the nervous system," Richmond stated, as per Scripps Oceanography report. She emphasized the center's commitment to the broad dissemination of its research and its potential for profound societal and scientific influence.

Aside from pushing the scientific frontiers, the Allen Discovery Center has pledged to lay paths for the next wave of scholars and researchers, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds. Collaborative workshops, conferences, and educational programs are in the pipeline, aiming to blend marine biology, neuroscience, and public engagement.
